Unlocking the Seafloor: A Smarter Approach to Anchoring Offshore Energy Systems

Dec 03 2025

3:30 PM - 4:00 PM CST

UI - Classroom 2, Room 261, 2nd floor

As offshore energy systems expand into deeper and more geologically diverse waters, anchoring remains a critical challenge. Whether for moored platforms, subsea infrastructure, or transmission cables, many offshore projects face constraints due to limited anchoring options in hard or mixed seabeds. Traditional anchoring methods—such as suction piles, gravity anchors, and large-diameter drilled foundations—often require costly, specialized vessels and significant surface support infrastructure. These limitations can increase project risk and cost, and in some cases, lead developers to avoid otherwise viable sites altogether.

Ramp Robotics has developed the Remote Anchoring Micro Piler (RAMP) system to address these constraints. RAMP installs high-strength micropile anchorages using compact, modular equipment that operates fully subsea and can be deployed from smaller, more widely available vessels of opportunity. The system includes an integrated subsea grout mixing plant, which eliminates the need to pump grout from the surface—reducing both vessel requirements and operational complexity. Its diverless operation improves safety, while the system’s small footprint and ability to support vertical loads can help reduce environmental impacts compared to traditional drag embedment anchors that require long horizontal mooring lines in contact with the seafloor.

This presentation will share insights from recent offshore prototype testing of the RAMP system, including anchoring performance, deployment logistics, and lessons learned. The discussion will explore how diverless, low-footprint anchoring systems can open access to constrained project sites, reduce installation costs, and offer a more flexible approach to anchoring across a wide range of offshore energy applications.
