Loop Current and Eddy Front Analysis for Offshore Operations Planning

The complex circulation of the Gulf of America, driven by the Loop Current (LC), Loop Current Eddies (LCEs), and cyclonic eddies (CEs), poses significant risks to offshore operations. Accurate identification of the location and intensity of these features is critical for defining safe operational windows but requires integration of diverse observational datasets.

This paper presents a frontal detection methodology in which the boundaries of LC/LCE features are estimated by the position of the 1.5‑knot isotach. The resulting fronts are used to characterize feature location and current intensity and validate numerical model output. The approach has been evaluated extensively since 1984 and is widely regarded as representative of ground truth for the placement of major oceanographic features in the region.
