Dr. Salvatore R. Mercogliano is a Professor of History and Chair of the Department of History, Criminal Justice, and Political Science at Campbell University in North Carolina, as well as an adjunct professor at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. A former merchant mariner with the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command, he holds a B.S. in Marine Transportation from SUNY Maritime College, an M.A. in Maritime History and Nautical Archaeology from East Carolina University, and a Ph.D. in Military and Naval History from the University of Alabama. Dr. Mercogliano is a prolific maritime historian, authoring Fourth Arm of Defense: Sealift and Maritime Logistics in the Vietnam War and contributing to publications like gCaptain, NY Times, Sea History, and Naval Institute Proceedings. He gained widespread recognition through his YouTube channel, What’s Going On With Shipping?, launched in 2021 after the Suez Canal blockage, where he analyzes global shipping trends and maritime issues, earning him appearances on major media outlets like BBC, CNN, and NPR.
