Enhancing North American Maritime Safety: Responding decisively to tow line entanglement

Nov 14 2024

10:45 AM - 11:15 AM CST

Responding effectively in an emergency takes training and access to the right emergency tools. In this presentation Chris Bond from Webtool highlights the importance of emergency cutting in reducing the risks to mariners in the event a tow line becomes wrapped around a vessel’s propeller or hull, leading to rapid capsize or sinking, endangering both crew and vessel. Likewise, entanglement with debris or other vessels poses grave risks, including vessel instability and loss of control. By using a portable hydraulic emergency cutter, tow lines can be cut in seconds mitigating the risks of girting and other dangerous scenarios. Stored in a rugged offshore-approved crate, it stands ready for deployment at a moment’s notice, providing offshore companies and maritime emergency responders in North America with a critical tool to avert disasters and save lives.
Webtool has over 30 years experience of hydraulic cutting tools for ROVs, offshore, and more recently the ARMOR 1 vessel Mat Sinking Unit for the Mississippi River. The Webtool emergency portable cutter is based on a system developed for the Canadian Coast Guard.
The presentation will give attendees the ability to better assess the risks of tow line entanglement and how to respond effectively to preserve life and vessel.
