Additive Manufacturing for Submarines: How AM is catalyzing reshoring efforts and innovating materials

Nov 14 2024

11:15 AM - 11:45 AM CST

Over the past decade, additive manufacturing (AM) has allowed a variety of industries to innovate and onshore production. COVID repercussions compounded with growing geopolitical tension has pushed this adoption even further, especially for agencies within the DoD looking to protect the national security and resilience of critical supply chains. Among the government agencies augmenting traditional manufacturing with industrial 3D printing is the U.S. Navy for its submarines.

Topics Greg Hayes, SVP of applied technology at EOS North America can delve into:

  • How the adoption of 3D printing can positively impact manufacturing processes, alleviate supply chain challenges and help to innovate the submarine industry
  • The possibilities created for new materials and special components through advancements in AM technology
    • EOS recently announced a new copper-nickel material which achieves excellent corrosion resistance in salt water and sustained performance in low temperatures
  • Learnings the submarine industry can take from EOS’ work for the U.S. Navy, Phillips Federal and The Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program
  • EOS’ commitment to furthering workforce development and new Metro-Detroit industrial 3D printing training center focused on upskilling engineering teams across the U.S.
