Mark Smitherman has served as the Executive Director of the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) since 2023, after joining ATI as the NSRP deputy director in 2018.  His 30 year career in the maritime industry has included applied research program and project management for clients at NAVSEA and the Office of Naval Research, shipyard production management for both new construction and repair, and sea duty in the US Navy submarine force.  He holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the US Naval Academy and an MBA from the University of Memphis.
