Lieutenant Commander Jonathan Copley currently serves as the Engineering Branch Chief for the Small Boat Product Line (SBPL), leading a team of 100 employees dispersed in 18 locations. As the Engineering Branch Chief, Lieutenant Commander Copley serves as the single point of accountability & direct liaison for all Area, District, Sector & DSF OPCONs for engineering, casualty response, depot repair & technical oversight on all 1,823 boats in CG inventory across 47 asset classes at 572 ashore & afloat units, valued at $1B. He executes an annual maintenance budget of $24M to perform 46% of the total USCG’s operational hours and is a CG-4 appointed Small Boat Tech Warrant Holder.
From 2012-2014, he served as a Student Engineer aboard USCGC Tampa (WMEC-902). Over the next three years, he served as an Availability Project Manager for SFLC’s Icebreaker, Buoy, and Construction Tender Product Line (IBCT), In 2017, he attended Old Dominion University and earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. From 2019-2022, he served as the Engineer Officer aboard USCGC Spencer (WMEC-905). Over the next two years, he served as an Expeditionary Logistics Support Officer under the Operational Logistics Command.
Lieutenant Commander Copley is a certified Project Management Professional and a Level II Acquisitions Program Manager. He is pursuing an M.S. degree in Systems Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and an M.A. in Defense and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College. He has two children, Noah (3) and Elijah (9 months), and is married to the former Mrs. Caitlin Haley of Nashville, TN.
