Hans Van Sumeren is the Senior Director of the Ocean Enterprise Initiative at the Marine Technology Society and past Director and Chair of the Great Lakes Water Studies Institute at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Michigan. He has collaboratively developed several new initiatives in water related research and education including a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Technology, associate degrees in Marine Technology, Water Quality and Environmental Technology, Freshwater Studies, ADCI Entry Level ROV Pilot Training credential, and most recently co-developed microcredentials in fundamental ROV and Sonar applications. Prior to Northwestern Michigan College, Hans worked at the University of Michigan in the Ocean Engineering Laboratory and the Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratories. Hans is the MTS Great Lakes section chair and former trustee at large with The Hydrographic Society of America. He completed a BSE and MSE in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan.
