David Von Schmidt is a maritime professional specializing in shipyard operations, dry docking, and maritime advisory services. He began his career as a United States Merchant Marine Officer while studying Nautical Sciences at the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS), gaining practical experience at sea before transitioning into the shipyard sector.
David earned an undergraduate degree in Maritime Management Administration from North Kent College and later moved ashore to pursue a career in shipyard operations, accepting the role of Dock Master. Over the course of his career, he has managed complex dry docking and waterfront operations at shipyards throughout the United States, including work with General Dynamics NASSCO and other leading commercial and government ship repair facilities.
Recognizing the importance of both engineering and operational expertise, David completed a Diploma in Naval Architecture through Lloyd’s Maritime Academy. He further expanded his professional qualifications by earning a Postgraduate Diploma in International Maritime Law with a specialization in Ship Finance from WMU, providing a unique combination of operational, technical, commercial, and legal expertise within the maritime industry.
Drawing upon experience gained at sea, in shipyards, and through advanced academic study, David founded VSM Associates, a maritime advisory firm focused on shipyards, dry docks, waterfront infrastructure, and maritime industrial operations. Today, he works with shipyards, vessel owners, government agencies, and maritime stakeholders to improve operational performance, strengthen infrastructure capabilities, and advance the future of the maritime industry.
