Diving into the Future: Empowering Educators with Underwater Robotics for Blue Economy Workforce Development

Nov 13 2024

11:30 AM - 12:00 PM CST

UI - Classsroom 1

Imagine a classroom where students don’t just learn about marine ecosystems – they explore them firsthand through the lens of building ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles). Picture a curriculum that doesn’t just teach coding – it applies it to solve real-world underwater challenges. This is the power of underwater robotics in education.

But, how do we bridge that gap between industry and our future workforce and cultivate the next generation of marine innovators? The answer lies in empowering our educators. By equipping our teachers with cutting-edge underwater robotics skills and a diverse support network, we’re not just preparing students for future careers – we’re diving headfirst into workforce innovation.

Project ROVe is bridging that gap between education and industry workforce. Project ROVe is a marine technology professional development program designed for K-college educators. Incubated within NOAA’s Teacher at Sea Alumni Association (TASAA), and partnering with Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE), it has reached educators in 19 different states and over 1,500 students across the country.

Project ROVe participants embark on an immersive journey into the world of underwater robotics through courses that integrate:

  • Hands-on ROV Building: Design and construct underwater robots, experiencing the challenges and triumphs students might face firsthand.
  • Real-world Problem Solving: Learn about local marine issues, such as environmental monitoring, and engage with local researchers to solve problems
  • Curriculum Integration: Develop engaging lesson plans and units that bring the excitement of underwater exploration into everyday learning, for every student.

Come learn more about Project ROVe, how it empowers educators, and its commitment to helping cultivate our leaders of tomorrow.
