Crew Culture as a Safety System: What Operators Should Know About Harassment Prevention, Inclusion, and Retention

Dec 02 2026

2:30 PM - 3:15 PM CST

IWBS - Classroom 2, Room R03

Commercial maritime operators are navigating a growing set of obligations around sexual harassment prevention and workplace conduct under the Safer Seas Act, while simultaneously managing a generational workforce shift that is raising the bar for crew culture and retention. This session examines how those two realities intersect, and why the quality of the onboard environment is not just a compliance or HR issue but a direct operational safety concern.

Through real-world examples and implementation insights, a panel of HR professionals, mariners, training specialists, and regulatory representatives will explore how policy, leadership behavior, and crew dynamics combine to either reinforce a respectful, high-performing crew environment — or compound the risks that come when they don’t. The session addresses Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment (SASH) compliance under the Safer Seas Act, the realities of small crew structures, 24/7 co-habitation, and the unique reporting challenges of vessel operations with a focus on what operators can actually do to reduce exposure, improve retention, and strengthen performance.

Attendees will:

  • Understand the connection between psychological safety and operational risk
  • Learn how to translate Safer Seas Act SASH requirements into practical onboard policy, reporting pathways, and Safety Management System integration
  • Hear what crew dynamics mean for operator liability, safety outcomes, and retention in commercial fleets
  • Explore the real cost of crew turnover versus retention, and the competitive advantage available to operators who address these dynamics proactively
  • Leave with practical strategies for integrating conduct expectations and SASH training into existing programs without adding operational burden
