The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) located in Houston, Texas, is the global leader for design of inland towboats and barges. We have a rich history of providing naval architecture, marine engineering and marine surveying services to the marine industry, with a focus on the inland sector. Inland barges built to our designs number in the thousands, along with a myriad of towboat, dry dock and other specialty designs. Further, we are proud to be one of the only naval architecture and marine engineering members of The American Waterways Operators and Passenger Vessel Association. TSGI has certifications for; AWO-RCP auditors, American Waterways Operators, and National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS). TSGI is certified to inspect and certify Marine Cargo Gear and we are Professional Engineers. We use state of the art computer modeling and design tools in concert with time honored design practices to develop innovative and functional designs that meet our customer’s diverse requirements. Let TSGI make your next project a reality.
The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) offers marine surveying and construction oversight to vessel owners, charters, and operators. This provides TSGI with a comprehensive picture of a client’s operation, and allows us to deliver on their specific needs and desires. These services can be in support of new construction projects, modifications, regularly scheduled dry docks or more comprehensive maintenance periods. TSGI also offers the following surveys: condition and valuation, trip and tow, and damage assessment. Satisfied TSGI clients understand the value of having one cohesive team that includes naval architects, marine engineers and marine surveyors, accomplish all of these phases of vessel creation and operation.
Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering
The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) offers design services from the conceptual design through the detail design and shipyard support. Some of TSGI’s design services include but are not limited to hull design, structural design and analysis, stability analysis, 3-D Structural design, and weight estimating. TSGI’s marine engineering practice focuses on the design of new vessels, repowering’s and mechanical and electrical upgrades. TSGI has been a key participant in the revolutionary changes to the inland waterways industry, including developing the design for the first Z drive towboats, the largest Z Drive towboats, diesel electric towboats, and the first LNG powered towboats. TSGI works with its clients to understand the needs and requirements of each client, and designs vessels specifically to meet those needs, whether Z drive or conventional.
SCF 6,600 HP Z-Drive Towboat
The Shearer Group, Inc. was contracted by SCF Marine to design a 6,600 HP triple screw z-drive towboat. The first vessel, SCF VISION, was delivered to SCF in the Spring of 2017. All three vessels have been delivered and are in service on the inland rivers for SCF Marine. The vessels are the largest z-drive towboats on the inland waterway.
PRCC LNG Towboat Conversion
The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) is participating with Pittsburgh Region Clean Cities (PRCC) and Clean Fuels Clean Rivers (CFCR) to conduct a marine air quality study centered on the conversion of an inland towboat to dual fuel diesel/LNG to reduce diesel emissions in marine vessels. TSGI is providing naval architecture services for the conversion of the vessel. Conversion work has begun and the conversion is expected to be complete by mid-year 2019.
Computer Modeling & Design
The Shearer Group, Inc.'s (TSGI) engineers utilize state of the art computer modeling and design tools. In addition to utilizing traditional naval architecture tools like General Hydrostatics and AutoCAD, TSGI makes use of other cutting-edge software to produce the best designs possible. To develop detailed structural designs TSGI makes use of SSI’s Ship Constructor and for structural analysis. TSGI uses NEi Nastran and FEMAP for Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Additionally, TSGI can perform Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyses using Orca Marine’s CFD program.
Texas Department of Transportation Contract
The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) was awarded a five-year Indefinite Deliverable contract with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). TSGI will provide design, engineering and construction oversight services to TxDOT for a new 495 passenger, 70 car ferry providing service from Galveston Island to Bolivar Peninsula.
Diesel Electric Towboat
In 2017, The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) teamed with ABB to perform a study of applying diesel electric technology to the inland marine industry. TSGI has been working with engineers from ABB since to develop and fine tune a diesel electric towboat design concept. Diesel electric propulsion provides savings from a variety of benefits including fuel savings, redundancy, safety, and engine maintenance schedules.
