Certification of Materials and Components
As part of classification, DNV GL also certifies all materials, components and systems relevant to safe operation and quality of ships. Our design assessment, type approvals and production assessments ensure that systems and components are fit for their purpose, and fulfil the requirements of the DNV GL Rules or specific recognised standards. DNV GL’s activities on Certification of Materials and Components are operated by a staff of some 150 dedicated specialists on the related technical engineering disciplines. This group of people is located at the head office in Oslo, and organised in sections representing each particular discipline.
Classification and Statutory Services
Classification and Statutory ServicesIn the development of modern maritime industry, ship classification has emerged as an essential contributor to the safe-guarding of life, property and the environment.Fundamentally classification is a very simple concept based on three main elements, applicable both to the newbuild and operational phases, Setting standards (Classification Rules) Verification of compliance with standards (approval of specifications and drawings, surveys and testing) Documenting compliance with standards (survey reports, Classification certificates)DNV GL's ship classification Rules are based on a wealth of experience accumulated during our more than 140 years of history and extensive research and development programs. Our classification services are performed through our global network of stations and approval centra, by systematically trained and well qualified surveyors, approval engineers and experts, extensively supported by state-of-the-art IT technology. Most of the Maritime Administrations have delegated the certification of ships according to IMO Conventions and Codes, to DNV GL. In most cases we do this for DNV GL-classed vessels only, but sometimes also independently of the vessels’ class. The degree of authorisation from the individual administration varies from full authorisation, where DNV GL is delegated the total certification process, to cases where the Maritime Administration is handling part of the process, such as the issuance of full term certificates.Statutory certification has a life time perspective for each vessel, from initial certification in connection with delivery, through annual, intermediate and renewal surveys during the operational life of the vessel. Statutory surveys will normally also be required when changing flag or class.DNV GL assures efficient and timely execution of statutory certification through a world wide net of experienced and qualified surveyors. To ensure cost efficiency, DNV GL is prepared to co-operate with owners/managers to plan the surveys to harmonize with vessels’ operational schedules.
CompetenceDNV GL 's objective is to safeguard life, property and the environment. To fulfil this objective a focus beyond vessel condition and organisational management systems is required. Many marine incidents and accidents are related to human errors and should be the starting point for proactive competence management activities. Addressing competence means protecting assets, securing future cost reductions and gaining competitive advantage.DNV GL SeaSkill™ does not perform training, but assists shipping companies, manufacturers and training providers to assure that competence is properly addressed, built and retained.
