e-Learning Implementation: Lessons Learned
In this joint presentation, Murray Goldberg of Marine Learning Systems and Kelly Curtin of Moran Towing Corporation, will present a case study on the implementation of blended learning in the maritime industry. The presentation is meant to provide valuable guidance for any operator considering improvements to their own training programs using these best-practice techniques.
The first half of the presentation will focus on the experience of one vessel operator that implemented blended learning 10 years ago to replace their traditional approach to vessel familiarization. Their approach will be presented, and the resulting reduction in accidents and insurance claims costs will be discussed.
The second half of the presentation will then discuss the current efforts and early experience at Moran Towing Corporation to facilitate the delivery of standardized, knowledge-based material in the form of eLearning, and to electronically record all training activities and assessments of skill proficiency. It discusses the key milestones issues encountered during their eLearning implementation such as planning, course content creation, program launch and employee engagement. It concludes by examining some of the critical challenges regarding employee learning and development in the workboat industry and provides recommendations to industry colleagues.
