Downey Engineering Corporation (DEC) is a full-service marine consulting firm providing cost-effective naval architecture, structural engineering, drafting, project management, 3-D laser scanning, regulatory, and production field support. DEC provides feasibility studies, conceptual design, functional/regulatory drawings, and detailed production level drawings in AutoCAD and ShipConstructor for both conversions and new construction. DEC provides FEA, vibration analysis, fatigue analysis, CFD, hydrodynamic motion analysis, pipe flexibility analysis, resistance and powering checks, and 3-D modeling. DEC is experienced with composites, aluminum, and steel construction, providing design and analysis services to both commercial and military clients. Design and management software licenses include Ansys Aqwa, AutoCAD, CD-Adapco Star-CCM+, GHS, Intergraph CAESAE II, MAESTRO, MS Project, NavCAD, NEi/NASTRAN, Pipe Flow, Rhino, ShipConstructor, and Star-CCM. Tug modifications provided for Hornbeck Offshore Services, LLC. DEC provided updated outboard profile and general arrangement drawings along with new fender/sponson arrangement drawings and installation details. DEC performed the incline experiment and submitted the stability calculations for ABS load line assignment.
Conversion of the 250’ OSV M/V Mystique into an ROV/Construction support vessel for Hornbeck Offshore Services LLC. DEC provided engineering, design and drafting services for LARS, HiPAP, and crane foundations and numerous outfitting items. DEC also provided piping system modification drawings, stability calculations and technical support for regulatory approval throughout the conversion process. DEC also supplied on-site field engineering support during the final stages of the conversion.
Conversion of a 200’ deck barge to a 250’ pipe lay barge for Dynamic Maritime Services, LLC. DEC provided design, engineering and drafting to lengthen the existing deck barge and to create a functional machinery, equipment and operations arrangement for pipe laying service. In addition to functional and detail design, DEC provided production support throughout the conversion and assisted in securing all regulatory approval and documentation.
Military - Stabilizer Fin Design and Analysis
As a subcontractor to QED Systems, Inc., DEC provided structural design and analysis for a fin stabilizer shape supplied by the US Navy. DEC created the complete structural arrangement for the fin and performed a finite element stress analysis which included hydrostatic loads, ship motion accelerations and shock. DEC also provided complete fabrication and installation drawings for shipyard use.
DEC provided extensive structural design and analysis support to Northrop Grumman Shipyard throughout the design development of the National Security Cutter Bertholf. DEC provided a full–ship finite element model for a global stress analysis followed by fine mesh models for several details. In addition to the structural validation, DEC also provided a longitudinal strength study, hull penetration analysis, fashion plate study, shear flow analysis, hangar racking study, and full-ship fatigue analysis. DEC also provided ShipConstructor modeling of the NSC superstructure.
Military - 180,000 DWT FSO Lombo Este
DEC provided project engineering, coordination and progress due diligence for the installation and startup of the FSO Lombo Este for Texaco Angola. The project included installation of a single point mooring, and coordinating international vendors and subcontractors for FSO installation and tandem shuttle tanker offloading.
